Is Shanghai set to become the ultimate destination for immersive experiences? The city has recently unveiled its plans to build 30 culture and tourism metaverse projects by 2025, aiming for an annual revenue of 50 billion yuan ๐ธ ($6.9 billion). ๐
Here is what you have to know about it:
The projects will integrate metaverse technologies into real-world tourist attractions, offering augmented reality interactions and avatar guides. ๐
Shanghai will support the development of digital artworks on blockchains and explore their integration in video games. Virtual idols will also be promoted. ๐จ
Shanghaiโs metaverse development will be based on extended reality, artificial intelligence, and blockchain, omitting cryptocurrencies for easier regulatory oversight. ๐งฉ
Shanghaiโs plan is quite strategic as East Asiaโs three industrial superpowers (South Korea, China, Japan) are taking their economic rivalry to the virtual world. Each is developing a domestic metaverse in a race to become the regionโs industry leader.

Sony's Mocopi full-body tracking system is launching in the United States. The set, priced at $450 ๐ธ, includes six small IMU-based sensors that provide accurate motion capture. It is now available for purchase via Sony's online store for the US market ๐บ๐ธ.
Why is it so important? ๐ค
Full-body tracking enhances the sense of presence in the metaverse by realistically embodying avatars and virtual characters ๐บ.
In this way, natural physical expressions and gestures will become much more engaging in virtual reality and feel more lifelike.
With its current pricing and incredibly lightweight design, Mocopi offers a more competitive solution compared to other trackers, such as Valve's, which are more expensive and quite cumbersome to set up and use ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ.
The hardware is already compatible with some metaverses, such as VR Chat and Cluster ๐.
The possible applications for these trackers are virtually endless. From creating dancing performances ๐ in the metaverse to following yoga lessons ๐ง in VR, the opportunities are vast. One thing is for sure: with the democratization of full-body tracking, more people will be able to express themselves in VR, further blurring the line between real and virtual bodies.

Deloitte has recently published its "2023 Quality Engineering Trends Report," revealing the transformation of quality engineering (QE) through technological advancements, AI, and emerging market demands.
A few of the most important findings include:
Tech giants have already committed billions to the development of the metaverse, ensuring its significance in the coming years ๐.
Companies invest in upskilling and innovative testing methods to embrace the metaverse, utilizing ML-based testing models, chaos engineering, and automation for immersive customer journey simulation and effective system vulnerability management. ๐.
Personal privacy and identity management represent a main risk/challenge when it comes to testing in the metaverse ๐.
A full manifestation of the metaverse might take a decade or more โณ.
Even if we are still quite far from the mainstreaming of the metaverse, testing becomes crucial for digital interactions. To prepare for this digital future, companies should prioritize developing an analytically driven test strategy to simulate immersive experiences and understand customer needs for business growth and adaptability.

FINAL REFLECTIONS
As highlighted in the Deloitte report, the mass adoption of the metaverse is still a distant reality. However, it is crucial to recognize that the upcoming years will determine the competitive advantage of certain players in this space. Eastern Asia, particularly China, South Korea, and Japan, has emerged as a hotspot for the metaverse race. These countries are heavily investing in metaverse projects, with a particular focus on implementing AR/VR solutions in their capital cities and key urban centers.
Reflecting on this trend, it becomes evident that companies are laying the groundwork for future metaverse interactions at both individual and organizational levels. The concept of full-body tracking serves as a prominent example of the direction people and the industry are heading. Individuals aspire to fully express themselves and desire others to perceive their virtual body language in a manner akin to real-life interactions. It is imperative to closely monitor these projects and companies as they establish the foundation for what the broader audience will engage with in the next few years. By doing so, we can stay ahead of the curve and understand the evolving landscape of the metaverse.
