🥊 The Zuck Disses Apple’s Vision Pro

Mark Zuckerberg is not afraid to express his opinions. In a recent video on Instagram, he takes some shots at the Apple Vision Pro, implying that even after using the competitor's headset, he still believes that Meta's Quest 3 is not just the better bargain but also the superior product in the vast landscape of Mixed Reality 🌐.

What did he say?

  • Zuckerberg's review highlights the Quest 3's superior comfort 📈, enhanced field of view, brighter screen, and reduced motion blur.

  • Weighing 120g less than its predecessor and free of cumbersome wires, the Quest 3 promises an immersive and unencumbered experience unlike Apple’s counterpart.

  • Despite the Vision Pro's higher resolution displays, Zuckerberg points out the compromises 📉 Apple had to make, notably in device comfort, ergonomics, and the presence of display artifacts.

It’s not all negatives…

Despite heavily criticizing the Vision Pro, Zuckerberg didn’t forget to give credit where credit is due. He acknowledges the Vision Pro's higher resolution displays and refers to the eye tracking found in the device as merely “nice.” 👀

The Open vs. Closed Model Debate

Zuckerberg isn't just advocating for a product; he's championing a philosophy. Drawing parallels with historical computing trends, he positions Meta as the proponent of an "open" model of MR computing 🌍, aiming to challenge the precedent set by Apple's "closed" system 🔒.

Our Thoughts: Well, this is some good marketing. Zuckerberg is certainly not afraid of drawing battle lines. However, it must be noted that both products have different strategies for different target segments that have both advantages and disadvantages. While the Quest is more affordable, comfortable, and has a better library of apps and games, the Vision Pro completely outclasses the Quest in terms of visual experience, ecosystem, power, eye tracking, and is a better machine overall if we consider productivity. There is only one thing we know for sure: competition drives innovation and better products. It will only get better from here.

A while ago, the media was quite worryingly covering the story of a UK woman being sexually harassed in Meta’s Horizon Worlds 🚨. This wasn’t the first time something similar had happened on a metaverse platform, but this case became significant enough for Meta to start taking action. Finally, three years after Horizon Worlds launched, Meta released an update that grants users the power to challenge restrictions tied to the platform's Code of Conduct 📜.

The Details:

  • Meta's guidelines prohibit deceptive promotions, illegal activities, spam, and public dissemination of sexually explicit or extremely violent content 🚫. These rules aim to foster a safe and respectful virtual environment.

  • Affected users can initiate an appeal via the 'Account Status' section, following links provided in warning or suspension notifications. This process underscores Meta's commitment to fairness and transparency ⚖️.

  • Meta is tightening the reins on conduct violations, with penalties ranging from temporary muting to restricted access to essential Quest features like Chats, Groups, and Calls. Severe or repeated infractions could lead to Horizon profile and Meta account deactivations .

Our Thoughts: The introduction of an appeal process in Horizon Worlds presents a complex dilemma. On one hand, it's a positive step towards allowing users to flag harmful content and behavior, underscoring Meta's dedication to creating a safe virtual space. But on the other, this move raises critical questions about the balance between restriction and freedom.

The original vision of the metaverse carries an anarchical ideal of unrestricted self-expression and autonomy. Finding the equilibrium between ensuring security and upholding the essence of freedom is paramount for Meta. As Horizon Worlds evolves, Meta's challenge will be to navigate this thin line, ensuring that the virtual world remains a place of endless possibility, without compromising on safety and respect 🌍💬. The success of this venture will hinge on Meta's ability to discern and implement measures that foster both creativity and community well-being, a task that is as daunting as it is necessary for the future of virtual interaction.
